I have been feeling nauseous and not quite myself for the past month. So far I have taken two pregnancy tests (the first one far to early to be considered), and the other this morning, which is the day of my expected period. They both showed negative results.

I believe that I started my period this morning, but it's an odd one. The blood is brown and old looking.

Would the pregnancy test read positive if this wasn't a real period?

Should I take another pregnancy test in a few days?

Should I see the doctor to a) see if I am pregnant, and b) see why I've been sick for so long if I'm not pregnant?

Argh! This is driving me crazy! I just need to know whether I'm pregnant or not. Or at least what is wrong with me.

Plus, if anyone knows of any doctor type sites with "chat with a doctor" type option, please let me know.

Just relax, Chances are you are so stressed that you have messed up your period cycle. Wait 2 weeks. Take one more test if it is still negative and you still don't feel you have had your period go to the doctor. I know on the back of most health insurance cards there is a nurse online. You could talk to that person. Really, 2 weeks is nothing in the grand scheme of 9 months.

A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks and it is nature's way of ending a pregnancy that is not developing normally. The length of the pregnancy will effect the number and severity of miscarriage symptoms.

A miscarriage that takes place shortly after conception can occur as a slightly late, slightly heavy period. Symptoms can vary from person to person, but there are common ones that generally occur:

Bleeding. This can range from brownish spotting to heavy bleeding. It is important to note that many women experience spotting or bleeding during pregnancy and about 50% of the time, the pregnancy progresses normally.
Pain or cramping in the lower abdominal area. The pain could be on just one side, both sides, or in the middle. You may also experience pain in the genitals, lower back, thighs, or buttocks.
You may notice that pregnancy symptoms like nausea and breast tenderness have subsided or lessoned. Be aware that some women do not notice any change in these symptoms, while others do.
Some women say that didn't "feel right" just prior to their symptoms.
If you are pregnant and experiencing symptoms you should contact your health care provider. If any of the following symptoms occur you should go the Emergency Room immediately:

Heavy bleeding
Passing clots or something that looks like tissue (bring the tissue to the hospital in a clean container)
A fever higher than 100.4 degrees F
Dizziness or fainting
A history of tubal (or ectopic) pregnancy
Severe vomiting
Severe pain the abdomen or back
If you have any uncertainty about the need to contact your health care provider, call him or her immediately.

Can I still be pregnant if the test is negative (have a "false negative")? In a word, yes. You could be testing too early (before your baby is making enough pregnancy hormone to be detected by the test.) And some women (this is fairly rare, but possible) never get a positive urine test even when they're definitely pregnant (for some reason the hormone doesn't make it into their urine.) I have a friend who didn't get a positive HPT until 25 DPO! (With her second baby, a test at 23 DPO was negative . . . but a test on 30 DPO was positive. Oddly enough, with #3, her positive test came at only 12 DPO.) If you get a negative test but think you might be preggo anyway, wait a couple of days (giving the hCG hormone time to build up) and try again. It's not over until the fat lady sings-- and your period crashes the party.

If you are not monitoring your fertility in any way (OPK's, charting cervical mucus or basal temperature, ultrasounds) it becomes extra-tricky. There are two parts to every menstrual cycle: from the start of your period to ovulation, which can vary quite a bit in length, and from ovulation to your next period, which is usually consistent in length. (This second half is known as the "luteal phase," and the normal range is 10-16 days. It's normal for your typical luteal phase to vary by a day or two. For example, mine is normally 11 days, but 10 and 12 are not unheard of either. I have also had a couple of longer ones by total fluke.)

Because ovulation can happen at any time, it's possible your egg was delayed for some reason (stress, illness, travel, excitement.) This doesn't mean your period is actually "late" (it could arrive within the normal 10-16 days after ovulation), but rather than your entire cycle was delayed due to a later-than-usual ovulation.

good luck

first of all if your just spotting then i can say maybe your pregnant. But if it is a full period but just a different color then normal then you better see a doctor because once i was bleeding for almost a year straight and it was because of my uterus breaking down and it started off brown and like a period but then it never went away until i saw a gyno and they fixed that. Then in 04 i started spotting everytime after making love went to the doctors and found out that i was pregnant. So I think you should go to the doctors. As for pregnancy tests if you were pregnant you would have a hormone that is so strong that it will be picked up by a pregnancy test.

First i just have to ask...Has anything stuck your head prior to all this? I only ask cuz a concussion can cause similar symptoms to pregnancy. Also I think it's still possible to have your period and still be pregnant (not to sure about that one, someone told that to me).

You should wait a few days take another test if it's still negative and you are bleeding oddly go see a doctor for a check up and for a blood pregnancy test

I'm in the same situation. My period is 5 days late today and 3 pregnancy test was negative. I'm waiting until Friday (I have appointment with my doctor) to have the blood test. You should do the same. Do not keep buying pharmacy test if the last one was negative. Good luck!!

If you are pregnant then it you won't have your period. Usually there is no blood even after you are pregnant. Is this the way your period usually feels or look like on the first day of your period? Or is this different? If you are on your period then you are not pregnant. I suggest you wait for the test results to come. They are the only ones that can answer your questions. Good Luck

I would check with a doctor for both those things. But since you had negative results in both, why not go for a third pregnancy test?

doctor sites usually are not accurate, it's always best to go to a doctor in person :)

I agree with the previous answer. Go to a doctor and get checked out. They can give you another pregnacy test there at the office. You may be stressed out and could be causing a delay in your period.
