In Australia- all legal documents are generally held together in bundles with pink light magenta ribbon. If you see a solicitor or a legal clerk etc with documents for court use you will notice the ribbon. Just take a look. I first noticed it when i was about 15 doing work exp. at a solicitors office in town... would be interested to know why the pink ribbon and why barristers wear dark pin stripe suits....

I've been practicing law in California since 1993. I've never seen a real judge bang a gavel and I've never seen legal documents bound with a pink ribbon.

Not in the US.

At one time it was traditionally done in the UK that barristers would roll up their briefs and tie them with ribbon. The documents would then be carried in pockets in the robes. This practice of holding documents together with ribbon was commonly done in government offices.

Ribbons used in this fashion in the UK were called tape. From which the expression "red tape".
