yes, the burner program just helps in telling the CD burner how to do its job - can't burn a CD (no matter what program you have) unless you have the hardware to burn CDs with.

Yes, something like Nero or Roxio works, but you can also get free burning software (search google or download.com)
I'm pretty sure you can burn CDs with Windows Media Player, but I recommend a third-party CD burner software

if the burner came with your computer it should the drivers and software installed that you need. If you added the burner then you will need to install drivers and software to use it. Most computers with burners can be accessed by using windows media or itunes.

Yes. The CD's will burn better and more securely when you burn through software rather than a direct burn through windows.
You can try Nero Express. Its the best one.

No. If you using XP you can use Windows XP burning application.
Just copy and Paste your files to CDRW drive.
You can use other application if you want more option, like burning a video disc, audio disc etc. Try nero ( http://www.nero.com/ )
