Either your pipes are rusting, your faucet is rusting or your water company is flushing their lines.

If it happened at only one faucet the problem is probably in your house. If it happened suddenly at all your faucets it is probably the water company. Call them & see if they are "flushing".

If you are on city water and not on a well or cistern, then your discoloration is either from the water service provider (broken line or maintenance etc.) or from your water pipe. Look at your pipe where it enters the house, is it galvanized? Look where the water comes out of the wall at the water heater, is it galvanized? Is your home more than 10 years old? this is a classic sign of galvanized pipe deterioration, either in your service line or internal plumbing, although it will probably last another 20 years. If your washing machine hose screens are not plugging up, your still ok. If this is a one time thing its probably the city, don't worry there is plenty of chlorine in the system. Run some water in a clear glass and let it settle and check for sediment. Do this with hot only then cold only, it may be your water heater.

If you own a house that is old it is probably rust in the pipes, having said that you mentioned that it rained recently which makes me think that you have a rain water tank. If this is so the tank could have been low thus stirring up mud in the bottom, after a couple of days this should clear. A combination of both ...old pipes and a tank could also be happening...Solution ...clean tank...get new pipes...this will also increase your pressure..I hope this helps..:]:]

IT DOES SOUND LIKE RUST AND MUD, But I would let the biggest faucets in the house run for a while full force, Then for a couple of days I would only use boiled water for any thing hitting my mouth and ears, eyes, nose, and throat ! I would recommend a drop of bleach except I don't know how many drops of bleach per gallon of water to purify it. Maybe some one can answer that one also! Bugsie

Could be rusty galvanized pipes if u have them. Copper or PVC won't rust. Might be a break in the line underground allowing dirt to enter. Look for water standing on lawn, under house, and between house and water meter (indicates a burst line). Try installing a filter/purifier. Ask neighbors if they have same problem.(indicates water department problem)
