The answers on the book says it's 4.5. Why?

ughh...angle bisector.

how could I not notice that?

The bisector of the angle will divide the opposite side into line segments that are proportional to the lengths of the sides.

Therefore,

x/9 = (7-x)/5

Cross multiplying

5x = 63 - 9x

14 x = 63

x = 9/2 = 4.5

The hypotenuse is 9 the formula for the base is 1/2 hypotenuse, so 9 /2 = 4.5

Notice the angle bisector. It means that...

5/(7-x)=9/x
5x=63-9x
14x=63
x=4.5

Also, to the last answer, this isn't a right triangle, so there is no hypotenuse.
