she wants to keep it for a pet.
Are they difficult to keep? What do you feed them? How does one go about holding one of these?

Porcupines are highly trainable, mine keeps guard over our house. He can also cook a wicked good smoked salmon and caper omelette. You just have to be patient with them, when challenged they can be a little "prickly".
My porcupine lives on the same diet as me, stale donuts and cigarettes and what ever I hit with my car. Last night we had something very like squirrel for dinner. I think it was a squirrel. Whatever it was Spikey(thats his name) loved it. I don't bother holding him, I get my kid to do it.

Okay, um, true to KS style. I had a relative that had a pet raccoon and porcupine. In her trailer mind you. The raccoon dug up all the little tiles in the bathroom. The porcupine bit a neighbors cat and the dog catchers came and took it. It made the local news. I was proud to know a celebrity.

In general, it's not a good idea to keep wild creatures as pets. If the porcupine is healthy, it ought to be released to its own habitat. If it's diseased or injured there are wild animal shelter/rehab services. Look up the service in your community. Don't try to nurse a sick animal...it could have something really nasty like rabies and communicate it to your family or domestic animals.

Go buy her something easier to keep. Like maybe a toy collie or a fish or a cocker spaniel. Kids need something that can fetch. As far as I know porcupines aren't trainable =P

Use a baby cage, feed it boiled rat granola bar cheesecake, and you can hold them with your hemostats. They love the attention when you look really closely at them. You can paint a huge bulls-eye on your living room wall and make a sport out of him. And you think Y!A points are fun... Have a ball!

So to speak.
