if you have a broadband internet connection, you can use that instead of a phone line.

you'll need an ethernet adapter (the TiVo website lists a bunch of compatible USB adapters based on your model of TiVo) and then just follow the directions on the TiVo support site - it's pretty easy to do.

You do not need to connect to the TiVo service at all so long as you are willing to use the TiVo as a VCR and set it to record manually, as in Channel 11 for one hour starting at 9:00.

If you have cable Internet (I'm assuming that you don't have DSL if you aren't getting a phone), your TiVo can update over the Internet. I update my TiVo over our cable modem via our wireless modem.

Ethernet would be extra solid. you would be able to desire to establish your pc as a proxy, by ability of having it log on your college community, and utilising ICS on yet another community adapter to connect your TiVo.
