Or, giggle in front of them? I think it's totally rude to let someone know you are poking fun at them. This happens a lot in Japan.

♡Oh yes! It's very rude to whisper about somebody in front of them, I think. I live in Japan too and I know what you mean. Mostly people don't bother to whisper, they speak in a regular voice because they assume I don't understand. It's never anything bad though, just interesting comments in my case. I always wait until people finish and then let on that I speak Japanese perfectly well.(*^o^*) Today I was in a public place and an older gentleman said to his son (in Japanese of course); "Look at that foreigner's BIG eyes, like a doll!" I didn't want him to continue talking about me (I was the only "foreigner" around.) so I looked directly at him and said; "Excuse me, what time is it?" in Japanese, they could clearly see I had a watch on. Needless to say, they were both a bit embarrassed! Yes, it's rude to poke fun at anyone. I'm so sorry to hear you say it happens a lot in Japan! Just don't pay attention to them Jen.♡

Yes! If you have something to say that you don't want someone else to hear, then you should talk about it privately. Talking bad about someone in front of them is very rude and can really hurt their feelings.

Duhhhhhh! Of course! I know this because I live in China and kids who see a blonde foreigner whisper and nudge at each other and look at me. Its so rude but since they are kids, I jusr smile and with a straight face, walk away. Its worse if that person knows you though...

Of course in the United States. Other cultures may do it more like in a shy way rather than meaning to be hurtful.

It's rude in the context of our culture, but Japan is a different culture so we shouldn't judge. Different cultures have different values.

yeah it's rude. But you never know, it probably varies from culture to culture and you just gotta get used to it. Where I live, people stare at me nonstop because I look different, and I just have to deal with it
