Batman TV batmobile question. Is it legal to make a reproduction if you don't intend to sell it?

I heard a guy at a convention had one he had made and it was seized from him. Was it taken because he claimed it was the real deal and was making money or simply because of copyright law? I would assume you could do whatever you wanted with your car. Anyone else hear that story?

I believe you aren't breaking the law so long as you don't profit from it.
