Seems like a ploy for the dry cleaners, like some deal made between apparel manufacturers and the dry cleaning industry.

NO!!! Certain items can be either hand washed using woolite. In fact sooo many clothes dont need to be dry cleaned, it would put the cleaners out of business. Try using e-how.com and look up laundering or dry cleaning and u can find all kinds of answers.
Good Luck sweetie!! Lauren

We found the same thing. Dry Cleaning is really getting expensive. I had an older suit cleaned & it was $12.50.

The next time it needed cleaning I said lets see what happens & my wife washed it in our washer. It had to be ironed which she did in about 20 minutes. It came out fine & now all my suits get washed.

I urge caution because everything may not work that way but we have saved enough money that if we wreck something we can affored to buy a new one.

I think it depends on the material. They say to dry clean just to be sure you can't return it if you wash it....I have experimented with different things and had good luck. I bought some curtains and hadn't read the tag that said dry clean only. I washed them and they are as good as new.

Our newer washers/dryers have something to do with it too. You have so many cycles to choose. The older ones offered hot/cold and one cycle.

It depends on the material. Linen, wool or silk definitely cannot be washed. Some things are too delicate to wash, that is why they suggest dry cleaning
