Let x be the number of girls.
x+x3/5=40
5x+3x=200
8x=200
x=200/8
x=25
So the number of girls is 25.
And the number of guys is 25*3/5=15.

Umm..I would do it like this..but maybe I'm wrong...
x/40=3/5 ----> multiply 3/5 by 8 on top and bottom to = 40...so you get 24/40...so there are 24 dudes..then you subtract 24 from 40 to find the amount of girls...which is 16...is that right?
is 3/5 a fraction of the amount of guys or is it a ratio...3 to 5? I don't know...haha!

The key to solvign this equation is algebra. So you know that the number of guys is 3/5 the number of girls. So, the number of guys = 3/5 of the girls, or 3/5 X (# of girls). So, let the # of girls = y. Then, the number of guys = 3/5y. Now, you know that the total number of students is 40. So you can set up an equation: (# of girls) + (# of guys) = (total), or (# of girls) + (# of guys) = 40. Now plug in: (3/5y) + (y) = 40. And now, just use ur algebra skills and calculate the answer!

There is no answer to this problem. You have 40 students in only one class. To multiply (3/5) with 40 will give you only number of guys in class. It does not give you the number of all male students in SCHOOL. You cannot determine the size of entire school by using the class ratio with just a total number of students in ONE CLASS.

Multiply 40 by 3/5, that will give you the number of boys, then take that number and subtract it from 40 and it will give you the number of girls.

Although your language is contradictory,yet the most possible answer would be:
let the number of girls be x.
Therefore the number of boys is 3x/5.
According to the problem,
3x/5+x=40
or,8x/5=40
or,x=25.
Ans:The number of girls in the school is 25 and the number of boys is 15.
