While the first answer is correct, I gotta tell you, where I live, there are LOTS of ticks, especially teeny-tiny baby ones (we call them seed ticks)....

If I had to use tweezers to remove them when I get into a bad nest of them (about once a year, while mushroom hunting), I'd be at it all night, and probably into the next morning.

I just grab 'em, and pull 'em out. If they haven't bitten you yet, and you have a bunch, try tape, the wider the better. Just make the tape into a circle, sticky side out, and start rolling it around the area with ticks.

I also had grandparents who said to put Vick's vapor rub on them, and they will release you. :)

The proper technique for tick removal includes the following steps:

Use a fine tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin surface as possible.
Pull backwards gently but firmly, using an even, steady pressure. Do not jerk or twist.
Do not squeeze, crush, or puncture the body of the tick, since its fluids may contain infectious agents.
After removing the tick, disinfect the skin and hands thoroughly with soap and water.
If sections of the mouth parts of the tick remain in the skin, these should be left alone; they will be expelled on their own. Attempts to remove these parts the same way one would remove a splinter usually result in significant tissue damage.

try really hot water first

if that doesnt work try a bit of mehtylated spirits

then if you still have no success - use tweezers and be careful not to leave any part of the tick behind

try and chuck the tick in a jar of alcohol - in case you get sick and you can show the tick to the doctor

watch yourself for any signs of infection, fever or generally feeling unwell

if you have any of these head to a doctor and tell him/her you were bitten by a tick

1: Take a shower with the water as hot as it will go, and the tick MIGHT fall off(I am sure, because I am a doctor, but they don't always fall off. If it doesn't, resort to stop #2). They don't like hot water, but you have to endure the pain of the hot water to get it off.

2: Take tweezers and gently pull the tick off. Do not rip it off, or you will still have the "tounge" in you (its too small to see) and pull gently untill it comes out. Then take a shower.

I heard that you can hold the tick's body away from your skin and then with a lighter burn the tick's back and it will retract out of your skin, I've never tried this so I don't really know whether it really works or not!

You don't want to use tweezers because the head will still be inside of you and you will get an infection. Put peanut butter over it and it will come out to breath. Ticks breathe through their butt.

Put vaseline all over it and wait a while, maybe an hour. The vaseline will suffocate it and as it dies, it will retract its head and any other part of its body that may have burrowed under your skin. Then it will fall off, leaving nothing stuck in you.
