For the best exchange rate, deposit the money in your checking account and withdraw it (in euro) from an ATM at your destination. Make sure that you have a four digit numerical pin number. Check with your bank that your bank card is okay for use abroad.

If you can, try using your credit card if possible. They offer some of the most competitive exchange rates around. If you're nervous, or need lots of money while you're over there, try finding someone with an AAA membership. You might need an appointment, but an AAA office will give you a very competitive rate, much better than the airport!

I think it's best to exchange the money after you arrive at your destination. The 1822 Sparkasse doesn't charge a fee for exchanging currency.
