The book 1984 closely mirrors the Soviet Union under the iron fist of Stalin. The beginnings of the party go along with the Bolsheviks -- Goldstein is a Trostky-like character. It provides great insight into a dictatorship and serves as a warning for society. I think it's important for everyone to read Orwell's lesson...plus, it's ridiculously entertaining.

Would you rather spend time reading it outside the classroom?
You might as well read it in class, so you can do less work at home.

It is a classic work of literature. Many of Orwell's predictions about the future actually came true.
