2.) Insecurity issues.
3.) They're young and haven't learned looks don't mean much.
4.) They are overly visual.
5.) They are overcompensating for something else.
6.) Because they can be.

I think all the above reasons are valid. I also think that young people are told to do one thing while seeing adults around them do something else. For example, how many young girls were told that boys/men like "good girls" who act a certain way, yet we see many high profile men marry strippers and former call girls. The message is clear as mud and it's obvious that a good education, good manners, concern for others and selflessness are not considered "admirable" traits in our society.
In short, why wouldn't someone be superficial when not being superficial has no discernible benefits?

It's easier to be superficial than to give anything thought. People generally take the easier way. Water always seeks it's lowest level.

Why?
Because they allow the media to form their thinking, instead of doing some serious reading and forming their own opinions.
