How to Apply Eyeliner

Shape and define your eyes with eyeliner after you've applied eye shadow and before applying mascara. Whether you choose a soft line or a dramatic stroke, eyeliner draws attention.

Steps:
1. Choose an eyeliner appropriate for your eye color. Brown, navy and charcoal accent light eyes well, while brown and plum shades flatter brown eyes. Make sure your liner complements the color of your shadow.

2. Consider the type of look you're after. Pencil eyeliner gives your eyes soft definition, while liquid versions offer precision and drama. You can also moisten dark eye shadow and apply it with a small, flat brush.

3. Prepare a cake liner or a dark eye shadow by applying a small amount of water to your brush. Or, if you're using a pencil eyeliner, ensure that you've sharpened the pencil adequately.

4. Move the wet brush gently through your cake liner or dark shadow. Hold the brush or pencil as you would hold a pen.

5. Tilt your head back slightly and bring your eyes to a half-open state. This creates a good angle for application, while allowing you to see what you're doing.

6. Draw a line across the upper lid just above the lashes, from the inside corner to the outside corner of the eye. If you're using liquid liner, allow it to dry before opening your eyes all the way, or the color may transfer into the crease of your eye.

7. If you used a brush or a pencil, soften the look by gently smudging the line with your brush, a cotton swab or your finger.

8. Line the lower lids. Moving from the outside edge inward, draw a line on the outer two-thirds of the lid or more, depending on the look you're going for. Your line should be slightly thicker at the outside corner, becoming thinner as it moves in toward your nose. Using your brush or pencil, lightly stroke the area. If using a liquid liner, apply it in one smooth stroke. Apply less color so your eyes don't appear raccoonlike.

Tips:
You may find eyeliner, particularly the liquid version, difficult and messy the first few times. Practice and have patience.

Wash brushes regularly with makeup remover or a mild gel shampoo.

Warnings:
Lining the inside of the lower lid is not recommended it may cause eye infections, and it greatly increases the risk of getting makeup in your eye.

Six steps for easy eyeliner application

1. For lining the top lid, use your non-dominant hand to pull the skin on the top of your eye taut, and then apply your eyeliner with your dominant hand. It may help to rest your dominant hand against your face as you apply it to help with control and support. It may take you a few attempts to get it right, but practice makes perfect! For the bottom of you eye, again rest your dominant hand against your face to line, and use your the other hand to help keep the lower lid taut.

2. I use an eyeliner that has a mechanical, twist-up-pencil type tip. I find that these are the easiest to apply!

3. Use short feathery strokes instead of trying to draw one solid line.

4. Keep your eye slightly open. I tilt my head back and look at the mirror with both eyes open. That allows you to get very close to your eyelash line.

5. If you use a pencil or crayon type liner, instead of a liquid one, put the line on and use a cotton bud tip to smooth out the line. This makes it a lot easier and quicker, and you don't have to worry about getting it right first time, it also makes the line subtler.

6. Applying eyeliner half way along the bottom lash line makes your eyes look rounder and more defined. Don't worry too much about a straight neat line; simply smudge the line with a cotton bud or your finger so it's soft and natural looking. Use Kohl pencils for the inner rims.

well, that would depend on the look your going for. If you want dark and dramatic you have to gently line the inside of your eye as well as the outside. If you have small eyes, just line the tops. Be sure to include the inner and outer corners. With black you have to be extra careful. I always apply black eyeliner first, so If I mess up I can start over easily. Use a soft eyeliner or liquid. Never the hard pencils. They just hurt and the application is difficult. When your in the store, try using just the tip of the liner on your hand and barely make a line. If nothing appears, move on until you find one that makes a dramatic line.
For softer looks, use a smudger and just play. Don't be afraid to try. eventually, you'll get the hang of it. Hope this helps. Good luck. MJ

If you're using liquid eyeliner, then yes, it is challenging. You just have to practice having a steady hand. Each day that goes by that you put it on, you'll get better and better. Another thing that helps it go on nicely (whether it's liquid, pencil, or powder) is to gently pull upward on your eyelid so that it gets as close to the lash line as possible.

I would also go to a couple of make up counters and get them to put it on for you while you watch in a hand-held mirror. They'll probably give you some tips on application too.

take the eyeliner pencil in one hand and hold down the bottom of your eye in the other. Then, try to put the eyeliner directly under your eye and behind your eyelashes! Go in a straight line under your eye. Hope this helps.

When I put on my eyeliner I always pull the corner of my eye to the side to made my lid flat and then gently line as close to the lash as possible. It goes on perfect everytime. I show that technique to everyone and they say it's a lot easier then how they do it.

I hope I explained it good enough for you to understand.

I think every girl is beautiful without makeup, but if you must, try to get the liquid stuff you apply with a brush, easier, and looks cool when it's kind of out side of the lid, curled a bit.

well, are you using pencil or liquid. liquid is harder to apply but doesn't smear as much. mainly with liquid you need a steady hand and apply under the lashes.
i prefer the pencil. i like ones that are a little on the expensive side, but the go on easier. i apply it right on the lashes. if you go with the pencil, to keep from smearing, place translucent powder under the eye.

Try a different brand that may go on softer, or a different type...Liquid vs pencil. Or u can warm up the liner u have (pencil) by running it under hot water to soften it...
