This is a list of local non-profit places on the area where I live but you might want ot check out your local UnitedWay and see who they partner with and get more info like that. You might also want to consider working for an organization or volunteering. I've worked for 3 local places and the benefits are pretty good.

Check out http://charitynavigator.org. They do not collect money on this site but they do list tons of charities. The best part is you can find out a little more about the charity; what are their goals, how many people do they help, and most importantly, how much of your donation actually goes to those in need. Many charities are "administration heavy" meaning they spend a higher amount of the donations on paying for offices, staff, etc. Any properly run charity needs paid employees to make it all work but if they're spending half or more of your donation on their own staff, then you may want to donate elsewhere.
