When I had my son, my milk didn't come in until 6 days after I delivered. But make sure you try and breastfeed your baby now so that your breast gets stimulated. Or, pump. Don't skip on either one.

When your baby is born, you have the early milk, known as colostrum. The more often you nurse the first day or two, the earlier your mature milk will come in. If you nurse at least every 2 hours (as is natural for human beings), you may have your milk by day 2. Otherwise, it could take several more days. It is very individual *in addition* to depending on nursing frequency.

However, pumping is *not* a good substitute for nursing. If you want to nurse, you should be finding out *why* your baby won't latch on and correcting it. If the hospital staff couldn't help you, please talk to a local La Leche League Leader (see sources section below) or *certified* lactation consultant (she will have an "IBCLC" after her name).

In the meantime, avoid all artificial nipples (pacifiers and bottles); they will only make it *harder* for your son to learn to latch on. Instead, try feeding with a cup, spoon, syringe, or nursing supplementer. Using a syringe is often the best option if you are trying to get him to nurse. Buy a syringe (no needle!!) in a local pharmacy; the size doesn't matter, but the larger it is the less often you have to refill. Fill it with pumped milk (or whatever you're feeding him). Offer him the breast, then place the syringe in the corner of his mouth. Drip small amounts of milk into his mouth while you encourage him to nurse.

But *please* call a La Leche League Leader for more specific and personal help.

I hope this helps. Good luck!!

If the baby is to the breast each time it demands feeding, then breastmilk should be in within a day or two, sometimes a little longer. The more the baby feeds the better as the more it takes, the more you make. You didn't say if the baby was preemie and maybe that is why you are having to express. Hopefully the hospital has given you plenty of info to take home..if not, call the Breastfeeding Mother's Association (or whatever it is called where you are). They have all the information under the sun. Good luck.

Milk usually comes in within 4-5 days after the birth

Always took me 2-3 days to see any milk. If you're pumping do it every 2-3 hours, as often as a baby would feed

Your milk should come in around 3 days...however, I am curious about who told you to pump? Please see the lactation consulant at the hospital, if you havent already - breastmilk comes in in a supply and demand fashion, his sucking will stimulate your milk to come in MUCH better than a pump will. Also, starting him on a bottle will make it more difficult for him to learn how to latch on (nipple confusion) If he is having trouble latching, talk to the lac. consultant about it and she can help you. I would definitely work on his latch, rather than pump and bottle feed- you are setting yourself up for failure that way. good luck!

breatmilk should come after 2 or 3 days of the birth. what comes out right after your baby is bor is colostrum. it gives the baby antibodies and some of the other things that it needs when it is born. give it some time for the baby to latch on. nobody is perfect. babies have to learn how to suck anything. if only we could teach the men. Hahahahaha.

I was told that the first 3 days it's just colostrum and the 3rd or 4th day the milk should come in. I havent had my baby yet so I'm not positive but that's what my aunt (who breastfed her daughter until she was 5...ugh) told me.
