The medical practice I work fo ris asking clinical staff to add dx codes to the medical encounter form ( super bill ) afer the patient has signed for services and left the office , to ensure payment of blood work ordeed by the doctor. Is this legal. I am not a Doctor and do not feel comfortable doing this. Can I report this to anyone?

if in doubt contact the state licensing board, they should be able to tell you if it is legal or not.

I am not sure that this is illegal. All medical bills are paid by diagnosis codes. I see nothing wrong with adding the code to the bill after the tests have been ordered and done....it is a matter of paper work completion. HOWEVER, if additional tests and codes are added AFTER the blood draw then, yes, it is fraud. If you are doing this then you are a part of the fraud. I would make sure that you know what is wrong and what is part of your job and what is legal and ethical.

There is such a thing as "whistle blower" law, that will pay you a portion of the penalties collocted from medical persons fraudulent billing. It's rather serious and a very steep penalty is attached. The person who "blows the whistle" is paid, as many would never do so, fearing retribution and loss of pay. SCREAM LOUD!!!!!
