crossing over happens dring metaphase 1 of meiosis 1 (for sexual reproduction) and is when two HOMOLOGOUS pairs of chomosomes (maternal-paternal pairs) pair up at the equator and form a tetrad and chiasmata, an x shaped tetra=4 crossing of chromatid arms intertwining with each other. During crossing over of the chromatid and chromosme arms, maternal and paternal genes can swap small sections of genes with each other, giving more genetic diversity to each of the FOUR cells eventually produced by the end of meiosis.

Mitosis-asexual reproduction, does not have tetrads or crossing over or homologous pairs coming together on the equator at metaphase and thus makes genetically identical cells, thus no genetic diversity-variation.

Its when Chromosmes exchange a small peice of theirselves to increase diversity among individuals.
This is just a summary, the whole proceess is much longer
