I don't think they had realized it, otherwise, they'd have taken out those fanatical Muslim bastards for a chance of survival.

whether they realized it or not, prior to 9-11, hijackings usually ended with the plane landing and a ransom demand, occasionally a commano raid on the plane - overall good chances of survival. Much like most of the US government, no one on the plane could have imagined what the plans were. It was only after the Flight 93 passengers heard about what happened in NY did they make other plans. Presumably from that point forward there will be no successful hijackings in the USA - even if they end in a crash as 93 did. My only fear is that terrorists are busy thinking up other scenarios the rest of us have not considered.

I don't know , but they had been taken over and turned around, what we do know is at least one plane knew they were going to die. Hopefully it's the later but I fear it wasn't.
