My daughter wants to take flute lessons. She is 6. I know someone who is selling a student flute in good condition for $100. Is this a good deal? How much would a new one cost?

That's a huge question! A student flute in good condition for a beginner is a good idea - beginners are hard on their instruments (especially if they don't take private lessons which I STRONGLY recommend as a private flute teacher). New flutes cost anywhere from $500++++ - emphasis on the +. I play a flute that cost $6500, and it is VERY mid-range.

Check out this website - it has everything you need to know about buying a flute, it's fantastic. Describes what you need, the terminology, brands, etc etc. And get your daughter into lessons - I love band but it will not and can not teach your daughter how to play the flute, it teachers her how to play in a group.

I have played the flute for 20 years, that's a pretty good deal if the flute is in good condition. You could always rent one for a while, but you could always sell the flute if she doesn't like it. I payed $700 for my daughters flute. So they can be pretty pricey. It might be best to have the person giving the lessons to look at the flute first and make sure it's in good working order.

First of all, you should probably rent one. But if you are willing to buy one, great deal! For your six year old daughter, you NEED to make sure that the flute has an offset G. That means that it will be easier for her little fingers to reach the holes. Make sure the flutes pads (the yellow stuff under the keys) aren't falling apart. To keep your flute in good condition, make sure she cleans it after EVERY single time she plays. Also, if you have trouble putting it together, rub pencil lead on the tenons. Good luck with everything!
