You can be goth and dress 'normally', as goth is a state of mind, a worldview or philosophy more than it is anything else. Also, an overabundance of goths are writers, artists and musicians, and if they can support themselves that way, they needn't have desk jobs, or have their appearance dictated to them by someone else. Lots have started and own their own businesses.

Same for anyone who chooses to have an extreme look outside of the mainstream: many are selfemployed, or are in professions where having a different "look" is a plus, like fashion, music, film, advertising, etc. There are also "trustafarians"--people who live very comfortably on their inheritances so they don't have to worry about conforming to any workplace dresscodes. I also know of a few people who just tone it down a notch or two for their work environments in relatively conservative jobs.
Its actually surprising how tolerant the mainstream has become of people who choose to look different--think of that goth character on the top 10 show NCIS who's treated as a respected employee.....of the US Navy! How much more mainstream of a workplace can you imagine!

I used to positioned on the dishevelled denims while i became youthful and the hoodies, yet now i'm 22 and that i seem decrease back on while i became 15 and dressing like that and it seems ridiculous. each and every time I see somebody dressed such as you're describing i think of the two: a million) massive interest seeker, going to be truly demanding to talk to, poorly knowledgeable (because of the fact they are able to't see how infantile they seem), has determine subjects 2) would not have the social skills to slot in with general human beings so as that they costume that thank you to pretend they by no ability had to interior the 1st place. They then attempt and justify themselves by putting out with different mess united statesinside the social scene. Apologies for being blunt approximately it, even even though it truly annoys me.

I know several goths over 30 (including my husband) and they have all sorts of jobs. My husband works at the local college as head of the media services department, others are artists, teachers, or even lawyers. If they have to, they just dress down for their jobs, and dress they want to when they're off of work, just like most people do.

They do what everyone else does. Growing up doesn't always mean "selling out" as you called it. As far as occupations, some of them can wear what they normally do for work and others have work appropriate clothes that they have just for work. Lots of them usually marry, have kids, and do everything so-called normal people do while still retaining their "gothness".

Most of them eventually "sell out" and act normal. I call this "growing up," but in many cases it doesn't set in until their 30s. Those who don't "grow up" might just kill themselves because they take it personally when people give them funny looks.
