I'll tell this to you from a professional perspective. I deal with foodborne illness complaints, and let's just say, we get a lot of BS calls.

if you notice something is not right with your meal. POLITELY tell your waiter and have him/her take it back to the kitchen for replacing. That usually takes care of it. Restaurants want repeat customers, so they do everything the can to accomodate, so long as you are polite with them.

If you get sick or injured from the meal, then you may want to consider calling your county health department (don't call the lawyer yet!!!).

If you call us, be prepared to give us thorough information: Name, home address, phone numbers. You have the right to report anonymously, but we really hate when you do tht because it's impossible to investigate if you do. Let me describe our process.

1. We get your calls, emails, faxes and letters.
2. We enter the info into our computers.
3. We send a health inspector to the restaurant.
4. We will call you for interview.
4a. If multiple households were involved it becomes an outbreak, then *I* will interview you and EVERYONE involved. This means I will call your house, fax you questionnaires, etc. I'm nice as long as you comply and don't waste my time. If you're BSing, and I have to work overtime because of it, I will put you on my personal S-list.
5. We do some data crunching and determine if something was really wrong (often, it's NOT the restaurant). If something was wrong, though, you might wanna call a lawyer, but usually that's unnecessary.
6. We close the case.

Don't make a big scene but call your waiter over and show him the problem. Usually in a fine restaurant they will compensate you for the trouble. If it is something gross like a finger - be careful.

Report it to the management. Don't think they don't want to know because they know they aren't going to get repeat business if people are finding things in their food. They may even give you the meal for free.

Don't freak out, but call over the waiter and point it out. You'll undoubtedly get a free meal.

Depends what it was lol. If it's a hair or something like that, I'd just ask them to take it back and bring me something else.
