It depends on the size you want. I usually only cover the top, and then sew a contrasting fabric to hang over the edges. A standard quilt will have around 1600. Some people make the large and some are small, so here is the way you decide. Make a square about 12 inches big, and count the ones you used. The measure the area you want to cover and multiply.
