Breathing can be dangerous. You can't live your life being afraid of "What if's". The media has sensationalized the tragedies that have happened. Its unfortunate and sad that bad things happen on cruises but bad things happen every where. If you have a dream I suggest that you chase it!!! Good Luck!!

The thing is about cruise ships is that they are a floating city and as with any city there is crime.
Yes there are a number of kidnappings and rapes that occur on cruise ships. Many are never reported in the news because they are settled out of court and with a confidentiality clause.
There has been a lot of attention to this issue recently after the Smith case. The Smiths were in no way shape or form first to have some horror befall them on a cruise. Not long ago there was a program on court tv about the frequency of these incidents. It was pretty scary. I have been on a cruise with no problems, I would go on one again..

I would however use common sense:
Don't get falling down drunk
Keep a close eye on your kids
Do not let a stranger into your cabin
Stay with your friends/family on the cruise - don't wander alone ETC

I think these are the same precautions you might take if you were at home or in a large city.

Go, have fun, and relax... See something new.

Go for it! Working on a cruise would be great, however, you could miss your friends & fam.... the reason you might think that you hear bad things happening on cruise lines is because they only report the negative stories to get people interested. If they reported your uncle's sister-in-law's cousin's vacation where everything went fine and they had a blast, would it really be interesting to read? No, so they put all the "bad" stuff in. Plus, like some of the other answers said, it's more dangerous in a car! So don't feel bad or nervous. And even if something tragic like the Titanic were to occur, you'd be totally prepared. I believe the crew on cruises must take classes to know what to do in an emergency. Think of all the new technology in our time, and then the Titanic's time. Life boats are motor powered, not row boats. The worst thing to happen would be if you got seasick, but it's not like it can't be cured on the cruise's spa! (P.S. If you want to have a singing career, start small and work your way up!) Happy sailing! :)

I agree...

Anywhere you'll go, you might expect it to be dangerous and hazardous to your health. Media people are masters at covering up certain things and details from the public. Otherwise, how would certain businesses prosper if the ugly truth would be told about them?

The Cruise Ships, no matter how much money is spend and how advanced the technology is... People can and do dissapear off of them, and no one hears or sees them again. No one can predict anything ahead of time and sometimes things turn out wonderfully for everyone aboard. Someone made a statistical analysis of the disapearances off the Cruise Ships. They came down to this: for every Cruise Ship about 1-4 people disapear and never arrive to their destination. The other thing that was discovered: The people who are disapearing are either the weak and vulnerable (i.e.: women), or worst of all, they're all by themselves making it a lot easier for others to do whatever they wish. And more often than not, the crew members are the ones who are involved in this as well.

Rule of thumb to follow whenever you're either on a Cruise Ship or going anywhere for the first (or repeated) time:
- Keep an eye out for anything unusual no matter what it is
- Be aware of your surroundings every step of the way
- Keep the trak of your belongings and depending where you go, try not keep a lot of cash or credit cards in your purse
- Be careful who you talk to: do not give out any personal information to a mere stranger. ESPECIALLY don't mention the fact that you're by yourself (if you are) and where your room is (even the floor number). If the question of whether you're by yourself will come up, say that your partner went out for a moment and he'll come back shortly.
- Watch your back, especially where there are a lot of people around and you're alone.
- Always lock the door to your room and don't let anyone you don't know in. If you have a balcony door: lock it, and make sure no one's in the room with you (the ones you don't need).
- Keep an open mind and don't assume ahead of time that nothing will happen.

Be always careful wherever you are, and if needed take someone with you to be with you no matter.

Take care and have fun :)

We've learned a lot about safety on ships since the Titanic sank in 1912. I think God made it sink to show us that no ship is unsinkable, and that we need better safety on ships. Thanks to Him, the cruise ships are a lot safer now. For one, it is now a law to have enough lifeboats so every passenger can use one. If an incident were to happen, you'd be fine. About the kidnappings: if you're in the middle of the ocean, where's a kidnapper going to take you? I've never been on a cruise, but my parents have, and they had a great time. Nothing bad happened on the ship. How does your friend know what the media is hiding? Is she a government agent? Probably not. If you ever decide to go on a cruise ship one day, plan ahead. Look over brochures and search the web for safety laws on ships. I'm sure you'll be much more comfortable riding on a cruise ship after some research.

Anyhow, good luck on your singing career!

I know of 3 people that work on Cruise ships for the last 5 yrs. 2 on Carnival & 1 on RC. Listen, it just like everyone to always believe what the media puts out there. There is nothing wrong w/the cruise ship industry. I have been on 7 cruise & i'm still here to talk about it. Cruising is a wonderful way to see the world. The only time that I have encounter a problem on a cruise (RC) was when the toilets were not flushing.
All in All... People have to be responsible for their own actions on a cruise or @ a resort OC(Out the Country). I have seen people pissy drunk, falling down stairs, stumbling back to their cabins, past out in pool chair in the hallways & a number of other things. It's not the cruiselines telling theys people to act this way or do the stupid things that they do. Some people just don't no how to say no when it comes to drinking & having to much fun. So don't let what others are saying about the cruiselines are covering up incidents. Some people just don't know how to party w/out going over board! HAHHAHHA!

I do not beleive cruise ships are unsafe. No more unsafe than traveling to other countries.
Everything we do in life has some risk.
I am not sure why the media would hide the negative. SInce they get such great press out of it. It would also be odd to me that they would hide things like Cruise kidnappings and yet give so much information regarding US Troops (or other nations troops for that mattter) to us.

I think that like in anything you need to be well informed about your enviornment and what is safe in that enviornment.

It is also different working on cruiseships and visiting one. The kidnappings and "stuff" that do happen are usually on a shore excursion. Employees have restrictions one when they can go to shore and when they will be needed on the ship.

Do some research about the industry. Perhaps read a cruiselines Annual report, perhaps they have something in there regarding the "mishaps." Since those would effect the bottom line.

Mostly not, unless you float into the Bermuda Triangle. A lot of mysteries including The Bermuda Triangle, almost 100 percent, have never been, and never will be, solved. This is very freaky, yet sad. Nobody knows what happend to the victims. Some say they were abducted by aliens. Others say there is a vortex that sucks boats in, and they are gone forever.

Another reason they are dangerous is because of iceburgs. The "Titanic", when built, was said it was the unsinkable ship. But now, it is one of the most famous ship-wrecks in the world. It was sunk by an ice burg.

Those are two reasons why I think cruise ships are dangerous.

The truth is, when a person is "missing" from a cruise ship, he probably fell overboard. This is caused by incompetence from the workers who are supposed to be on the lookout for this type of accident, but it does not happen often. And when a person falls overboard, and nobody notices until later, its going to be virtually impossible to find his body, since the boat is already miles away from where he fell, and the ocean is very big, and a human body is about the size of a basketball in comparison.you don't have to worry. Even if something did happen, for example it started sinking, you'd get off safely and so would everyone else. And you could not get kidnapped because if they tried where would they go? I mean, they have people everywhere, plus they have all night events. I think that like an air port they check everyone, so don't be afraid.

It is something to consider that you do not have the benefit of the police or a hospital while out at sea. Give careful consideration to whether these risks are worth a singing career at sea. My advice would be to sing on dry land. It's one thing to take a cruise once every few years-it's another to be on a never ending boat ride-it will fast become the boat ride from hell-to work at a place isn't nearly as nice as being a pampered guest in the short term. I have heard stories that I would rather not repeat as I'm not sure they are fact but they come from different sources who do not know each other and who are in different countries-so it does seem believeable. Let me put it this way-I would not work on a cruise ship for all the tea in China!!

Yes.

True.

Believe your friend. Read the book: Economics of a Cruise Ship.

And the truth will set you free.

They are notorious for:

The spread of disease: remember you are in a small confined quarters.

The incidents of rape by employees: When it happens(which is often) it is hidden. Those that do it are taken off the ship, and are prosecuting them is difficult at best, if even possible.

That is only part of it:

The industry pollutes, and treat the employees bad. They put on a show, the truth is behind the curtain.

The average price that they spend a day on a meal: And you have all heard that it is all the food you can eat, costs an average per day per person: $12.95.

On more expensive lines: $19.00 a person.

There is a dark side to cruising...and it pays to know about it. It is what they don't want you to know that is scary!
