Is it a CD drive or DVD/CD combo drive? Try your CD's on another drive that you know works. If this drive plays the CD's then you can eliminate the CD's as the problem. If it doesn't work then something is wrong with the CD drive hardware or software. First, try to see if it is a hardware problem. Buy a lens cleaner, from your local computer store, and clean your drive. Afterwards, try your CD again and see if it plays or not. Another hardware problem is that the drive's laser is burnt out. The laser in a CD drive reads the disk eventually the laser will burnt out. If your drive is really old then this might be the problem. Now, there are a number of software reasons. Did you recently change the driver for the CD drive? The driver is usually the problem. The solution is to download and install the latest driver and see if this solves the problem. Try these things and see if one of them works. I can't possibly cover all the reason why a CD drive doesn't work. Get back to me if it doesn't work.

Try the cd rom in a different computer ( IF it does the same thing, then the cd lasers lense needs a clean that or the cd rom drive is broken and you just need a new one ) You can get them cheaply now from anywhere and the same for a dvd rw drive so I just recomend you get a dvd rw drive :)

It's probably not a CD drive, but a 5.25" floppy drive. Both these drives take the same size disks, but you have to have a CD drive to read a CD, and a floppy disk drive to read floppy disks.
