I've heard that Firefly is best, but I do not believe that kids should have cell phones. If you are a parent, I'm sure that you could understand this reason.
Cell phones are just another health liability that is possible of causing serious damage later on in life.
In the air, there is something called Electro-Magnetic Chaos (EMC); this is an invisible electric field that causes transmitions to be made to another phone. (Towers just aide in directing the signal, so it doesn't get lost or create an interferance.)
Also, with cell phones, this chaos is directed into one place when you're talking, or just carrying it around (on or off): the brain, and the body. This type of damage is very extensive and can result in major health problems later on in life as they continue to use the phone.
If you would like more information, I suggest extensive research.
I hope this helped you.

A Firefly. When they hit 11, I would upgrade to a camera phone. Make sure text is cheap, cause im 14 and I text a lot more than call.
The only way to get numbers into a Firefly is to program them in, so youll have to teach them how to do that or they wont be able to call anyone.
I dont know why all you dingbats are saying kids dont need cell phones. If your worrying about the bill, get them a Tracfone or a Virgin Mobile Phone. There both prepaid, and if you lose it, then youll only be out about 50 or 60 bucks. Thats not bad considering whats available.(RAZRs are about 300). A good way to get them out of the habit of running up the bill is to make them pay for there minutes. I have a tracfone and I paid for it. My mom pays for the cards however. The only thing good about prepaid is that there is no bill, that way my mom wont be able to tell who I call!

A New Prepaid Tracfone that starts as low as $20 and you add a minute card for 19.99 every 60 days to keep you phone number and minutes rollover. they are the best "nationwide" prepaid provider with over 10 million customers including everyone in my family plus their is no lengthy contract to sign no monthly bills no wireless taxes and fees no age limits and no deposits. It is virtually anonymous. I am a teen of 16 and I found that I like this much better than a plan because you DONT have to sign a 2 year contract and if you terminate early you get hit with a termination fee etc. and you can even get a year card for $100 and that is cellphone service for $8.33 a month who can beat that? No-one exept tracfone. Check it out http://www.tracfone.com it will save you in the long run in case your kids talk a lot you wont get hit with a big monthly bill.

It depends on the company you're going with. If the company you are with has the option of using GSM phones (i.e you need to insert a little chip into the back of your phone so the network recognizes it), I would advise getting the Firefly. If your network uses CDMA (no little chip you need to insert), then I would suggest the Migo (offered by Telus here in Canada, I'm sure also by another company down in the U.S depending on where you are). These phones both have very limited use, only being able to dial certain numbers. The Migo only allows for 4 different programmable phone numbers. The Firefly allows for a speed-dial for mom, a speed-dial for dad, and up to 20 programmable numbers.

no offense...cell phones have become a part of daily lives, however I remember a time when cell phones didn't exist...but the human race continued, I grew up in a great family with good morals and have turned out to be a successful individual without a cell phone on my hip, I know society has changed and things are different but I still truly believe cell phones are not a necessity for 8 to 10 yr old kids...teach your child what to avoid in reference to negative influences and what to do in an emergency..if you truly believe your child needs a cell phone for an emergency purpose....give a trac phone with limited minutes

Well instead of getting them a cellphone why don't you just like five them firfly that helps keep track of where the kids are and also they can talk to you from anywhere.

I mean seriously do you really think that 8 to 10 year olds are so responsible? Yes, it would be different that they would be attached to it for a few days but when they are used to it then they won't really care for cellphones I mean sure they are a very dandy think in today's society.

WHAT? an 8-10 year old with a cell phone! unbelievable! don't get that dumb firefly thing, waste of money! Just get one of those free phones that don't have any feautures! My first phone (2005) didn't have an external screen, any downloadable games or ringtones, just a color screen, and that was it!
