When baseball went major league in 1871, all of the stadiums had very small ballparks. They were all cheaply constructed and all of the seats were wooden bleachers with numbers painted on them to organize certain seats. The bleachers were excellent for the teams and the saying is continued in honor of those early ball fields that started what we know as a day in ol' ball yard.
