Back in the 80's there were few or no women who wore bras & lacy stuff as everyday outer clothes. She sung about her sexuality and sexual needs with no shame ("Like a Virgin") and was breaking ideas of who is in control of a relationship ("Express Yourself"). This wasn't happening much before her. She sung about getting pregnant out of wedlock, which was also shocking ("I'm keepin my baby"), and later actually did have a daughter without marrying the father. She also played with kinkier bondage gear (leather & spanking stuff).
She played with religious images which angered people. "How can a 's.l.u.t' pretend that she is spiritual?" In her "Like a Prayer" video she kisses a Jesus-like person (who was black, which also upset some people). Others think she uses religious beliefs like disposable trends, and that creates controversy.
She published a book called "Sex" which had naked pictures of her and others - I haven't seen them, but I get the feeling they were pornographic to most people. It also had a lot of heavily sexual stories.
She's also such a huge star & had so much influence on younger people that I think many parents were worried that she was a role model.
She had calmed down a lot in the last few years, so I'm not surprised that younger fans aren't sure of what the big deal is.

I think early on in her career it was just that people thought her outfits made her look cheap. But over the years, her music videos have covered issues like race relations, burning crosses, teen pregnancy. I know it's not because she is for those things. She just knows that these issues get talked about and it brings attention to her. The more adults hate her for bringing up controversial issues in her music, the more the teens love her. So, in the end, controversy brings her more business. I think that she believes talking about such issues and will make people more open to working on those issues, so that they don't continue to be problems. For example, I remember Madonna campaigning alot about safe sex. She wants teens to know the dangers of sex, because if they aren't told, they may have unsafe sex and get a disease. But some people today think that such things are too risky to talk about, even when it could save the lives of younger generations. That's where the controversy is.

Trying to explain Madonna is like trying to explain Barney--both of them are mysteries that are better left alone lol. Madonna's controversy simply comes from thinking and acting outside of the box, and not being afraid to ruffle feathers with her risque' approach to entertainment. She's been known to pretend to masturbate on stage, cross dress as a man, mock being a virgin, be shunned by the Pope, etc.
**Personally, I still like the 1980-90's Madonna, and The Immaculate Collection is my favorite CD to clean house to!

She danced around in a churchyard full of burning crosses and kissed a black man in "Like a Prayer" He was being portrayed as the lord almighty and it implied that she was having "Relations" with him. The Catholic church got themselves all whipped up into a frenzy and the Pepsi Corporation dropped her from their ads at the time.

Plus - her video "Justify my love" was banned from MTV for it's racy scenes. She's running out of ways to Re-Invent herself, so the new act of crucifying herself is just another weak attempt to get attention through controversy. I love her recent lame attempts to compete with Gwen Stefani. We get it Madge, you're old and you want the world to know that you look just as good in a leotard as Gwen, for the love of god woman, have some pride!

She may not seem like she is now but back in the day she was very very controversial. She paved the way for the pop princesses of today.

Among other things, she had an album more or less devoted to sex and sensuality. She dressed up really differently, for instance, and her attitude was provocative. Nowadays, provocation and sluttiness are just "normal".
