OK i am also from Jersey. You can take the car to inspection, but you will fail right away. Check engine lites are considered as an emmission standard failure. One you fail, you have a specif number of days to have it repaired. Maybe you should have a local repair shop diagnosis the car 1st to see at what expense it will be to fix. Then you can etermine if it is worth taking to inspection, or fix it before you go and save a trip.
Where in NJ? I may be able to help you.

ok baffled, first forget all that you were told. a 1995 vehicle is a borderline tier 2 diagnostic system and you can`t turn off the check engine light with just removing the battery cable for any amount of time. you need a scan tool(not cheap) or someone with a scan tool. second, a check engine light is more than just emission related. hell, emission controls weren`t even monitored until 1998 and then updated in 2004 so that tells you how much some of your answerers know. the gas cap issue won`t set a light unless your car was made after 1998. but i do agree with one answer, something is wrong, the light is not on for no reason so get it scanned and yes, the yellow ones are just as important as the red ones. why do you think they call them idiot lights. i don`t know how jersey is on inspection but they look at emissions, not engine lights.

Your check engine light monitors numerous components on your car. Everything from minor vacuum leaks to misfire in the cylinders. A gas cap not properly installed can trigger that light on some cars. The light does not mean that you will always fail your emission test, but it is a warning that something is or has failed and left a hard code in your onboard computer. You should at least have it scanned and find out what code it is and what part it relates to. Inspection stations only monitor the emissions and not your warning lights.

They don't care about an engine light...just the safety of the car.
Good Luck...those engine lights are there to scare people back to the dealers$$$...only red lights are important...not the yellow ones :)

I have learned a little secret about the CHECK INGINE SOON light. If you don't put your gascap on right everytime that light will come on. Take the gas cap off, then put it back on and disconnect the battery cable, then reconnect it. Usually that will make the CHECK INGINE light go off
