Becks has done a decent enough job, but he has only kept the capaincy because he has Sven in his back pocket. I reckon McClaren will keep him as skipper for a couple of games after the World Cup and then hand it over to John Terry (who just happens to be Mr Consistency and a hell of a leader - Look what he's done/doing at Chelsea). Bottom Line - Becks until 2007 then John Terry for England Captain. Having said all that, wouldn't it be nice to see Becks lifting that Trophy in a month's time?

I would definitely say Steven Gerrard is in the best position to lead the English.
David Beckham does not command the respect of his teammates. He doesn't inspire at all cos he doesn't have pace, can't dribble, can't tackle and is basically good for nothing except sending in curling shots and crosses.
Gerrard can do much more. He can take the free kicks well, maybe not as well as Beckham but already excellent. He can shoot from distance from open play - just look at how many times he has scored. He can defend as well.
And most importantly, he can inspire and commands tremendous amounts of respect from all those around him: just look at last year's Champs League finals against AC Milan and this year's FA Cup finals against West Ham. Look at how he rallied Liverpool to come back from 3 and 2 goals down respectively, and ultimately triumph on penalties. This is definitely good enough testimony to prove Gerrard's worth to England. For that, he should be made captain.
Well, as for Beckham, how many times has he inspired victories? Furthermore he's been fluctuating drastically in form ever since he moved to Madrid. Even before the move, he was playing terribly at Man Utd. In fact, he was quite useless at Utd but just had to be fielded cos he was captain.
So lesson to learn is, ditch Beckham as captain of England so that he need not play!
Let Gerrard wear the armband and lead England to the World Cup!

Why shouldn't he be what has he done wrong he influences the players hes played for a lot longer than most other players has experience in different situations (including be sent off against the argies) and is one of the best players at dead ball situations (who else do you want taking free kicks or corners have you watched the warm up games.

Yep! It should be John Terry or Steve Gerrard. Both are more mature and can (hopefully) be relied upon not to kick out at the opponent in front of the ref! Besides, Terrys command and reading of the game is pure poetry in motion.

What you mean there is more than Wayne Rooney in the England team?
Sorry that's the only player I have heard about every day for the past month or so. To be honest I just don't care anymore

YES!.....I am so glad you agree. The should let an Englishman that PLAYS in England be the captain... plus he isn't even the best player, I think all hes got is an ok brain and good free kicks and that isn't a complete player.

I definately agree. Just because he sells jersey's doesnt mean he should be captain. All he does is free kicks and cross it in on corners. He isnt that fast or have great skill... he is average but not good enough to be skipper of the english national team... Give THE ARMBAND TO JOHN TERRY or FRANK LAMPARD!!!.. people that deserve it!
