The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago Illinois. Some of their best exhibits are Colleen Moore's Fairy Dollhouse, a coal mine exhibit, a submarine exhibit, an Egyptian room, & a hands-on exhibit for the kids. Right now the "Frogs! A Chorus of Colors" is being advertised.
While in the Chicago area there is also The Chicago Maritime Society, Six Flags Great America, or the beach along the Great Lakes.

St. Louis City Museum.
Fantastic place. And it's not just for kids. It's like a McDonald's playground for almost everyone. (Although there are some really small places)

I'm not sure the name. But Chicago has a really cool science museum.
