That's the point - so do a lot of straight people feel that way - and the amendment was turned down today.
The Religious Right - the spiritually intolerant you might call them - feel they are poised for a big win and are pushing every button they can. Frankly, this came up now, I think, to deflect people from realizing that as we speak, Bush is trying to have more of his like minded judges confirmed (link below). That is the real danger - Bush knew he would lose but he played the card at just the right time do keep us all occupied while the real things happened. He is playing us like children and we do not disappoint.
Your problem is not with me and the millions of other straight folks like me, who ar happy for you to have the legal right to marriage - you are on your own for the spiritual side, but there are lots of faiths that do not care about your sexual preference, they care about your heart and soul.
I think 75% of America just want to live their own life the way they want and they don't care what others are doing until it disturbs them (like loud music on saturday morning while you are sleeping, rudeness on the highway or in the office, etc.).
The remaining 25% think that life would be perfect if everyone believed and did the same as they did and they work tirelessly in this pursuit, without thought for individuals or even what is right some times. We are all persecuted by these intrusive, intolerant people in all levels of our lives. I think that is where the team lines are divided more than gay and straight.

Think about Canada. We've allowed gay marriage.
Otherwise, straight people are not all bad. I don't know exactly the feeling of the situation over there, but I'm sure that once Bush gets out of the office it'll be fine. Things take time, but until then, keep your eye out for any elections, and vote in them. =) Best way to change peoples minds - change the people!

Remember, not all straight people are bigots. I try my best not to be. America was founded by a group of people fighting for their basic human rights. Keep fighting. There are some, like myself, who still believe in "equal rights for all". As far as calling it a civil union; why settle for second-class status? Do you not feel you deserve better? I'm not gay, but have a friend who is. She should not have to settle for anything less than any other American.

If you are confident in who you are and your values and ideals then you will have found tolerence. There are still many things that are not "fair" in this world, and there will always be things that aren't fair to somebody. It takes a long time for things to change...generations even. Society has it's "addictions to attidudes" and to create change these things must be rewired slowly. It will happen someday, but maybe for your kids. You will live a much happier life being confident that it will be the next generation to enjoy the fruits of your labors. If you decide to just hate "straights" you will just live a life of intolerance and hate. And really, isn't that just the attitude you are trying to get rid of??
Good luck!!

I 'm sure that you realize that all straight people (thank god) do not agree with the president. I say the and not our, as I didn't vote for him and my guess is you didn't either...I, as many others, believe that the constitution was designed to give rights, and not take them away...I also believe that this is just cheap theatrics, to divert attention away from all the other things the president has screwed up...Hang in there. I am praying that the people in the US wake up and do what's right. If not, we may all go to hell in a hand basket!!!

Straight OLD men, yes, generally you are right.
You could become politically active and work for candidates, or become more than active and someday run for office. Just be realistic to start with.
As for tolerating, or more accurately respecting straight people -- think of all your straight male friends (I have huge numbers, I presume you do too) -- they are wonderful, they accept you for you, and they love you. Do the same in reverse.

Ah yes the majority, there are some straight people who make me want to throw up, especially women. And it is maddening when the president brings his religious views into matters. I just wish "freedom of religion" meant "Freedom from religion" Its not the straight people's fault. They don't know what they have.
