Listen to and practice solo's covering a range of music. Learn a variety of scales, but don't get confined to them. A good electric guitar soloist to emulate would be brian may in my opinion. For sheer technical ability you could look at the work of jason becker, but if you want to look at incredibly well rounded, impressive guitar to try out, take a look at marty friedman. You could probably play his song "Night".
Also get familiar with bends in place of hammering on and pulling off. They can add a lot of depth and emotion to solo's.
Practice different techniques like tremelo or sweep picking as well. The most important thing is practice, but education is fairly important as well.
Best of luck.

Squire is a first rate starter sort, and sound very properly for almost any variety of track. on an identical time as you could play any sort on any guitar, some sound greater beneficial than others. Like somebody else mentioned, Dean could be good for metallic. So might Ibanez or Epiphone. i might propose no longer procuring a guitar from Wal-Mart, objective, Hastings, ect. purchase from a track save or track catalog which includes Musicians pal.
