clean the tank, gravel, filter and anything else in the tank. If it still smells, try a little bleach, but be sure you rinse very carefully and thoroughly afterwards since bleach is toxic to fish. replace the filter cartriges at least once a month. Don't feed your fish as much, or as often, and change 1/3 of the water in the tank at least once a month making sure to get some of the bottom water. This should help. There is also a chemical you can get at the pet store to help remove the smell.

Do you have trpoical fish or meat eater fish? Get a fish that cleans the tank or even a snail they clean good and fast. Maybe the filters need to be changed. The best thing I found is to change the water, then get a new fish to help keep it clean. The cleaner the water is the better it will smell! Good luck, If no help go to local pet store they should be able to helpyou.

The real answer to your question is go buy a fish filter. Depending on the size of your tank, some water filters are very cheap if you go to petsmart. They are called Whisper 40, 60 and 80 depending on the size of the tank. Also you need to buy a bubble stone. That circulates the air in the water and give off more oxygen to the fish and not pollute the water and gets less dirty.

Salt or fresh?
If it is fresh you can buy a Placastomus which eats the algae in your tank.Excessive algae can stink. Do you have a filter? A good powerful one if your tank is big. When you wash your tank be sure not to wash it with bleach it can kill your fish even if you wash it off good. Also take all the gravel out and wash it good in a strainer, not a bucket. They also have underwater filters that clean your tank form the bottom up. Very handy, you don't have too clean your tank hardly ever! Good Luck, tell your fish hi for me.

DO NOT replace all of the water in the tank!!!! replacing all of the water will get rid of good bacteria that keeps the tank from getting dirty and protects the fishes. also the change in temp can shock the fishes and kill them. no good. do a 20% water change, trying to keep the replacing water as close to the water already in your tank (temp wise) as possible. be sure to properly condition the new water before adding it. you may also need to change ur filter. my tank is pretty stinky too and i just got it a week ago! i go on this great site called fish.com. there is alot of really knowledgable people on that site to help you out and it's free. it's all about fish! good luck with your tank and NO FULL WATER CHANGES! got it? k good luck.

are u using anything to clean it out? you should change the pad things in ur filter so it works better and use one of those suction filter things that stirs up the gravel at the bottom of ur tank and takes all the crap out, You do this by havin a bucket near to empty the dirty water into, it costs about £7 from a pet shop and is the best thing i have bought!!!

it really sounds as though the odor you are smelling is ging to be the growing of algae---does the sides or front of your tank face a window or door and do you leave the tank light on for long periods---these are the two #1 rasons for algae growth and that will cause an odor before you see the algae problem

Flush any extra fish down the other "tank", and tell the kids they ran away.
j/k....... I don't know, but I do know that I don't like to have or care for fish for that very reason. So much to do, so little time!
lol
Good luck anyways!

I would change the water. All of it. And while your doing that, clean each part of the aquarium thoroughly, including the filter and everything. Then get this stuff that keeps the water clear...I forget the name of it, but Wal-Mart sells it...then get this stuff that takes the clorine out of the water. If you keep your filter changed and cleaned regularly, you shouldn't have a problem. Also, once the water gets dirty, change it regularly.
Good Luck!
