I would not recommend purchasing an HP laptop. I own one and I've known others who own HP computers and we can all say they produce nothing but problems and are made of cheap parts.

In my case, my mouse botton on my laptop broke within 6 months of owning the thing. I have two keys on the keyboard that are nearly breaking off and the PC speakers are the cheapest and cruddy sounding speakers I've ever heard on any laptop. I've had my HP laptop for 3 years now (with minimal use mind you and paid $1,200 for it) and I'll never buy HP again.

Upon research in laptops, and being an IT professional, IBM laptops are probably the best ones on the market, but they are also expensive. Underneath that I'd go for Dell, Sony, or Toshiba. Anything else you're wasting your money.

Go To www.hpshopping.com, click on notebook pcs, You will be asked then either Compaq or hp pavilion, There you will ind several series, 1st series is bigger screen size, 2nd is 14.0" screens, the series then is mostly Intel or AMD. I would pick to customize, This allows choices of Windows home or pro, then you can pick the CPU you desire,Here the guiding is mostly price.
Then you can choose size of Hard Drive, Amount of memory, and then the CD drives. cd-r, cd+DVD and Light Scribe.
Hope this helps

They are better than the Vaio and Dell. And they have more features for the buck.
