Who won? The people who did not have their rights stripped from them out of fear, hatred and prejudice. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans (as a party) had any personal stake in the outcome. Only those who rights were being threatened. And fortunately they won.

BTW, saying anything is a "sacred union" immediately put it into a religious not legal context.

Marriage, from a religious point of view, is whatever the religion defines it to be. Marriage, from a legal point of view, is whatever the law defines it to be. Trying to enforce a religious definition as a matter of law is basically promoting one set of religious beliefs over any others, and thank the Gods we have a Constitution that prohibits that.

BTW, for those who have trouble with math, two-thirds of 100 is 67 votes in favor.

The Republicans were hoping to break fifty votes but only got 49; Democrats got 48.

Because they've voting on amending the constitution, they need a two-thirds majority to put it through -- that means it won't happen until it gets 60 yes votes rather than the bare-majority 50. This thing will take years to get through Congress, if it ever does.
