You need a good filter for starters, this takes out all the disease and bacteria that begins to grow and just generally keeps a healthy flow of water circulating. Secondly make sure you are not over feeding them, fish can go up to 3 weeks without food so i suggest you feed them about 5 small pellets each every other day.Remember they have to go to the toilet also and whatever you feed them is going to come out the other end.
What water do you put back in when you have cleaned out the pond? Tap water kills goldfish and so should not be used unless boiled (leave to cool) or left to stand for 3 days for the chlorine to evapourate. You can also buy medication to treat the water but you have to be careful how much you use. Also try and keep the temperature of the water at about 26 degrees, this stops bacteria like white spot from breeding.
Overcrowding could be another problem but only because of the toilet thing. If you have a ratio of 8:2 say, there is a lot more fish than there is water (well not enough water for them basically and then because there is so many fish to parts water the water just gets full of ammonia and nitrate.
Take a sample of water to your local fish shop, they will test it for free and give you all the help and advice that you need. I had a lot of trouble with my goldfish and koi carp, touchwood my fish is now doing well, i also have plecs and algae eaters, they get rid of the green. Let me know how you get on.

How big is your pond? To have 40 goldfish in it, it should be way more then 100 gallon I hope! If it is kind of small it may be possible you have it over crowded.
Petco is wrong.
For goldfish the rule is every inch of goldfish needs 2 gallons of water. So if you have a one inch fish it would need a 2 gallon tank.
So depending how big your fish are, depends how much water they need.
They are very dirty fish, if you do not have a filter make sure to get one. Your ammonia levels may be up from all the waste.
Another possibility is it is getting a lot hotter lately. Make sure the water isn't getting over 83ish degrees. Goldfish have a hard time in warm water.
A dirty patch on it. What kind? what does it look like? It could maybe be a type pf fungus or bacteria but it is very hard to tell without a more descriptive description.

Take a look at one of them (from the pond / tank I mean, as you have no doubt disposed of the unfortunate ones which died.
You may notice on one or some of the remaining fish a white spot very small probably a few spots on each one affected, if of course this is what's wrong.
Don't worry but act quickly if you find the above, get to a vetinenary and they will give you some treatment for the water to divert this from having any further casualties.
and of course a simpler reason may be over feeding.
Anyway hope you solve it.

You might have to separate some of the goldfish(the pond and a tank). When my fish started to die, most were because the fish didn't get along and there was to many fish in the tank. So you can either separate the fish or put a stress reliever(which you can buy at a local pet store) to keep some of your fish from dying.

Syphon the water out to a reasonably low level then fill back up.
Hot waether may be the cause so you can just leave a hose in there each day for 10 mins (providing you live outside the hose pipe ban areas)

my parents have a pond with fish in it also. when you clean the pond, do you take the fish out? if you do, you need to put them into a plastic bag just how you would get it when you buy them. before you put the fish back into the pond you need to keep them in the plastic bag and let them sit in the pond water because if you automaticly put them in the water they go into shock because of the difference in water tempeture. or try buying the water test strips which you can get any where and you can see what is in your pond and if your fish are in danger.

Get all the fish out asap.
The water, tank & anything else in there needs to be thrown out or thoroughly cleaned.
There may have been some kind of infection that killed one, & was passed on to the other. By now, it may be too late but you can but try.
One of my goldfish hit one of the rocks inside the tank, that got infected and it killed the other three within 24 hours.
Good luck, I hope yours don't go the same way.

Could be fin rot. Go to a pet shop that sells fish and aquariums etc as soon as possible because you can buy fish "antibiotics" to treat the water, and make sure the infection isn't passed on. Do it soon and don't let them suffer much longer.
