Let x = Ed's miles, then
x+6 = Nina's miles
x +(x+6) = 46
2x + 6 = 46
2x = 40
x = 20
Thus, Nina walked
20 + 6 = 26 miles

If you choose D seems just that easy, the problem is if in a dialectical way, the trick is to think about ED walking 40 miles and then Nina would have walk just as A says. I mean the effort made by Ed, then he is tired and his wife put 6 miles more.
However, if Ed just walked 20, then Nina made 26 as D answer,
But I'd say the person who answer just 6 is right

Set up some variables. N for miles Nina walked, and since she walks 6 more miles than her husband, N-6 for miles Ed walks.

Their combined mileage is 46 so N + N -6 = 46.
2N = 52
N = 26

Which checks out since 26 + 20 = 46.
The infomation about money is extraneous and we can ignore it.

lets assume:
n=nina's milage that she walked
e=ed's milage

n=e+6
n+e=46
e+6+e=46
e=20 therefor n=26
so the correct answer is D.
