~Charlemagne, between 772 and 784, united the Gauls in what we know today as France. Son of Carloman II, a Teutonic king, from the principality of Scleissweg and last monarch of house of Froghliche, Charles was of German stock. By 771, the Gauls had become so far removed from their Teutonic roots that they no longer considered themselves Germanic. Realizing the jeopardy the Gaul's animosity to things german would place his throne in, he changed the family surname to Froggeaux in 789.

Ever mindful of the insult upon them, the germanic fiefdoms never forgot Charlemagne's original family name, and began calling the Gauls Froggeaux, particularly during the heat of the many battles between the 2 nations over the ensuing centuries.

Another confederation of germanic tribes, the Anglos, the Saxons and the Normans (progenators of today's British), picked up on the name and anglicized it, in Shakespeare's time (as evidenced by his use of the term in no fewer than three of his sonnets), to Frogge. It was a small step to today's Frog.

For the same reason we Québécois refer to you Canadians as 'blokes' and squareheads'. Sincerely, no clue. Mutual dislike, perhaps, that has turned into a habit? We don't like being called 'frogs', though, I can tell you that.
