Because when ever a bill is written supporting giving more power to a minority group or removing restrictions because of being a minority, almost always it is a liberal democrat behind the change. Republicans are typically conservative, and the definition of conservative is to resist change.

SO frightening that some answers say that Democrats brought around the Civil Rights Movement - A Republican President freed the slaves and the Republicans are the ones whose votes got the Civil Rights Amendments thru the House & Senate. In the 50s & 60s Democrats (particularly those in the South) did everything possible to maintain the status quo. Dems encourage minorities to blame others for their troubles rather than encourage them to fight for a better education to get ahead. Republicans are pushing for school vouchers to help poorer people afford better schools vs. Dems who want to throw more money into a broken public school system that doesn't hold teachers responsible for kids who get passed to the next level even if they can't read!

Wow. Some of posters on this page are consumed by bigotist thinking. Contrary to popular opinion, African Americans (myself included) don't just rubber-stamp Democratic policies (are we underappreciated? sure, but so are labor unions, homosexuals, women, and a host of other bases of the party). And references to "the party that freed the slaves" is more irrelevant than i care to describe. Simply put, Democratic politicans support government as an instrument of (a) social change and (b) civil rights. Look at the recent gay marriage decision - democrats are sticking by a policiy that has seventy percent approval nation wide BECAUSE it is primarily a topic dealing with discrimination and civil rights. They stand up for the humanity of illegal aliens IN SPITE OF fear-mongering politicans who wish to separate instead of unite (see Lou Dobbs, who doesn't think Mexican Flags belong in American Parades. I didn't see him protesting St. Patrick's Day or the numerous [and perfectly acceptable] Italian American and Irish American parades held throught the country). Conservatives , which make up an overwhelming majority of the Republican base, is a group that group stands opposed to increases in public education funding (use in proportionally huge numbers by Afro-Americans), social service programs (welfare, medicaid) and affirmative action [after 200+ years of slavery and 100+ years of apartheid ( or as we know it, Jim Crow), how can things be completely equal after two generations?]. African Americans support democrats because we (generally) understand what conservatism, in any party, means for racial and other minorities. I am and African American Democrat. And proud.

Because the Democratic spin miesters have them convinced that conservatives are bigoted. It was FDR who with his plan to assist Americans devastated by the depression, ended up creating a class of people dependent on government entitlements. I think ultimately conservative polices like ending affirmative action and welfare reform will make minorities more self reliant. What they need are not hand-outs but to pick themselves up, get educations and seize the opportunity available to them. There are some intelligent minority leaders who understand that some democrats are only interested an keeping poorer people and minorities reliant, to keep them voting for them. That is the real tragedy.

because republicans dont do anything for poor, impoverished black communities. Everybody thinks ohhh its there fault they dont have any money because theyre too lazy to get a job. Well unless you grew up in the hood u wouldnt know how it is. conservatives are stupid and most of them are redneck racist. also theyre not really conservatives because all theyve been doing lately is refusing to follow the constitution and add their own things to it. please dont vote republican. why vote for somebody that has put so many lives to rest, lied to his own people, allowing horrid things to go on and then deny half of it or make up stupid excuses. the only republican i like is collin powell because he took responsibility for the mistake of the iraq war and later resigned, something bush and cheney, rumsfeld and rice shoulda done. chances are if you ever talk to a republican they are gunna be white, unfair, show hatred towards you and not be the smartest ppl you have met. dont use californians as an example for democrates they are all rich scumbags.

good question! i don't understand why they loved president clinton.. what did he do for the black community? how many blacks -or minorities did he have in his cabinet? now look at president bush... check out his former and current cabinet members.. and he hates black people?! i think it's because the black leaders (jesse jackson, al sharpton, etc) constantly speak out against republicans. i wish more blacks would listen to alternative opinions by other leaders of their community such as reverend jesse lee peterson and others who offer an opposing view to the extreme lefties. www.bondinfo.org
