Poland was formed over 1,000 years ago when the Piast dynasty ruled. In 966, prince Mieszko I got a christening to himself and whole Polish nation. The best times came for Poland in the 16th century under the Jagiellonian dynasty. In that time Poland was one of the biggest, richest and strongest kingdoms in Europe.

In 1791 the Sejm of Poland and Lithuania (these countries were one country at that time) accepted the Constitution of May 3 which was the first modern constitution in Europe and the second (after USA) on Earth. Soon Poland's territory was taken over by three neighbouring countries - Russia, Austria, and Prussia. Poland became a free country again in 1918 after the First World War. It was the first country attacked by Germany in 1939. When the Second World War ended in 1945 Poland became controlled by the Soviet Union.

In 1989 Solidarity - a political group led by Lech Wałęsa - helped get overthrow the communist government in Poland. Currently Poland is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the European Union.
