As containment is applied to Vietnam it failed. Mostly it failed because of the unintended consequences of containment applied to that particular country. Also, we failed to keep our efforts small and appropriate to our real interests. However, it is too easy to judge in retrospect.
Containment in Korea is by comparison a success.
Containment overall must be judged a success as Communism is in deep retreat.
As for Vietnam, it exposed some problems with our ability to use containment every where. I think many valuable lessons can be learned. However, I do not see anyone learning the right lessons. We seem to be learning lessons of avoidance which will lead us right where we were before WWII. Attempting to avoid conflict and letting tyrants use incremental tactics to gain large victories.
An example of lessons of avoidance is the so called Powell Doctrine. Avoid conflict unless you can apply massive force. Hitler would have loved an enemy like that! Announce an exit strategy. Tells your enemy your not committed to the task. Saddam read the Powell Doctrine to mean Kuwait he could get away with. If it had not been Bush I seeing appeasement was near Iraq would be a bigger pain today.

All I know is my Dad went there for nine months and came back...Thank God... and didn't like to talk about it too much...except for the great friends he made there...and he told me that it was his job because he was in the service and he didn't appreciate all the soldier bashing they got when they came home...that it was a political war and the troops' hands were tied because of the political aspect of it. So yeah I guess the troops were contained or a better word would be restrained from doing what really needed to be done.

Vietnam War
conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. The war began soon after the Geneva Conference provisionally divided (1954) Vietnam at 17° N lat. into the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). It escalated from a Vietnamese civil war into a limited international conflict in which the United States was deeply involved, and did not end, despite peace agreements in 1973, until North Vietnam's successful offensive in 1975 resulted in South Vietnam's collapse and the unification of Vietnam by the North.
Causes and Early Years
In part, the war was a legacy of France's colonial rule, which ended in 1954 with the French army's catastrophic defeat at Dienbienphu and the acceptance of the Geneva Conference agreements (see Vietnam). Elections scheduled for 1956 in South Vietnam for the reunification of Vietnam were canceled by President Ngo Dinh Diem. His action was denounced by Ho Chi Minh, since the Communists had expected to benefit from them. After 1956, Diem's government faced increasingly serious opposition from the Viet Cong, insurgents aided by North Vietnam. The Viet Cong became masters of the guerrilla tactics of North Vietnam's Vo Nguyen Giap. Diem's army received U.S. advice and aid, but was unable to suppress the guerrillas, who established a political organization, the National Liberation Front (NLF) in 1960.

The US wants allies so we are nice. And if anyone ever says we lost that war tell emm to shut the **** up because we never declared war. We were only there as target practice for the other side while the Vietnamese we were helping got a chance to die last.

Marmar, here is what you do, take all the news reports about today's war in Iran, substitute sand for jungle and you have Vietnam all over again, just political bungling by fools in Washington who just want to enrich their bank accounts.....
