get him something he won't be able to have there. Like if he has a favorite food, they usually have terrible food in hospitals. and soft toilet paper because their's is always scratchy. and chapstick. slippers. a security blanket made out of real cloth.

Do you have something like a small computer he can borrow? Something that he can use, some kind of a game? Something that he doesn't have to do any deep thinking with, but that he can have fun with would be good. I know when I've been in the hospital I didn't need anything I had to really concentrate on seriously with. Hope this helps!

Get him something to pass the time; a book, magazine, tamagotchi or puzzle. You could lend him a gameboy if you have access to one!
It could be a good idea to phone him before you visit and ask if there's anything he needs or wants to make his stay feel more comfortable.
When my friend was in hospital for ages I made them a badge saying "I make this gown look good!"

A favorite flavored milkshake, some reading material or puzzle book, hard candy(your mouth is usually dry if you have had surgery or have been on medication), and anything else that you think may interest him to take his mind off his pain, long days, etc. A smile and the visit is probably what he will appreciate most!

As a disabled person I have spent a LOT of time in (various) hospitals - and all I really cared about was the visitor. Everybody brings STUFF and then leaves after 10 minutes, I prefer the visitor that brings NOWT - but stays!

No! No flowers people! Not only are the hospitals trying to get people not to bring them in (in case of alleric reactions, bugs etc), but why would a guy want them?! Plus they die and start to smell.... Get him something thoughtful, like maybe some books you know he likes, or some magazines (if he is a lads bloke, nuts, zoo, maxim should do). If he is allowed to eat and drink properly, then maybe some of his favourite food or drink.... Just not the old cliche of grapes and chocolates!

I'd get him what you'd like to have if you were in the hospital. If I were in the hospital I would want a magazine and a good book.

if he's a guy he won't care about flowers so forget it.
See if he has a VCR or DVD on the tv in his room and bring him a movie. magazines are always good. But the best thing would be those electronic handheld games like Connect Four and YAHTZEE

Get him a get well card. And just showing up is something he won't forget ever. A true friend will be there for you also. Hope he gets better soon.

Well, depending on how long he is going to be there you could get him a really good book to help pass the time or maybe his favorite magazine. If it is a shorter time something like his favorite food or maybe when he is released do something with him that he really enjoys.
