you need to get the rocks checked thoroughly to make sure they don't dissolve or give off any acid or chemicals.

best way is to buy them from fish shops but if you do get them from a river do these tests.

1, put some vinegar on it. if it fizzes its no good.
2, same thing with lemon juice.
3, leave it in water in a container for a week. if the water clouds its no good.

I set up a Lake Malawi reef this way, it was great. I DID have 2 limestone rocks in to help with my ph/kh, but I did this intentionally.
Boil them and cool them. If you can cut a piece of styrofoam to fit the botto of your tank (best on a new set up) and this way if your rocks ever shift during a cleaning or due to a fish digging nearby the falling rock won't crack the bottom of your tank. Be sure to carefully distribute the weight evenly if they are large and heavy,

Also, hard lesson learned... if you keep ornamental aquatic snails you may want to pass on the big heavy rocks.... my 4 year old was heartbroken when Gary (1, we are now on Gary 3) was killed in a tragic rock slide in the tank.

You can,I would make sure to soak them maybe even boil them for a short time.Let them cool down and soak again for a short period in cool water just to be sure they are free of any fungus etc.I've never had any problems with the ones I've found.

Depends on the kind of rock. Avoid limestone or shale. (slate is fine). Also, as others have mentioned sterilize them if you don't want an unwanted snail population. Trust me on this one.

Yes, no problem. You may want to boil them first to kill any bacterias if you have sensitive fish like discus.
