If you can shop daily and learn what times the shop marks down the produce, meats and breads and try to get in then. Today I purchased a 600g package of fresh chopped veggie soup at .99c marked down $3.50 which has the best by date of 27/4. Although it is the 30th here the soup is still good and will be lunch with some leftovers for tomorrow. Don't fall over in shock at our prices, I just used that as an example. Home brand products are normally the same as the 'name' brand without the flash labels.

Fruits and veggies are low in cholesterol and are very good for you. Avacados have natural fat in them, and are good for you. Raw nuts are best because they haven't been cooked yet and there are great benefits to eating them. Some servings of low fat dairy foods are good, too. Fish like salmon, halibut and tuna are good. Shell fish are bottom feeders and are not recommended. Some complain that there is too much mercury in the ocean to eat fish. I still eat some servings every month because variety in ones diet is good.

In order to reduce cholesterol level, you must pay attention to what you eat and how you eat. Here are a few basic rules that you have to follow if you need to reduce cholesterol, basically if you want to have a healthy diet.
Rule Nr.1
Cut back on foods rich in saturated fat like animal meats (red meat) and fried foods. Try eating more often 'white meat' meaning chicken, turkey or fish as these kinds of foods have a low fat level.
Rule Nr. 2
If you want to reduce cholesterol level, you need to eat more vegetables and fruits. There are never too many fruits or vegetables in an alimentation process. These foods present the advantage of having a low calories and fat level, but, above all, they contain a broad number of vitamins and antioxidants that are helping your body fight cellular damage.
Rule Nr. 3
Try eating low fat dairy products. They may not be as tasty as the regular ones, but they surely reduce cholesterol.
Rule Nr. 4
You don't need to give up eating dressings or gravies. You just have to reduce their quantity in your alimentation. Therefore you should start serving them aside to make sure you control the amount you're eating. You can even buy low fat dips.
Rule Nr. 5
Pay attention to how you cook your food. Stop using partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (found in margarines and shortenings) as they contain trans-fatty acids, a form of fat that is raising cholesterol level. Cookies, candies and chips also contain these trans-fatty acids, so be careful. Grilling your food instead of frying it will surely help you reduce cholesterol.
Rule Nr. 6
Carbohydrates give you quick energy as they are converted into sugar in your body, but they are also causing you weight gain and high glucose level that will eventually lead to diabetes. They also lower your HDL level. So be careful at carbohydrates. Whole grain products are low in flour and high in fiber, minerals and vitamins so eating them will reduce cholesterol and make you healthier.
Rule Nr. 7
If you are badly craving for a snack, have some nuts and seeds. They contain unsaturated fats that are lowering the LDL level (bad cholesterol) which eventually reduce total cholesterol level. Nuts and seeds also give you vitamin E, B (which will help you have a healthy shiny hair and strong nails) and minerals.
These rules may make you think like there is no fun in eating anymore. Keep in mind that you don't have to give up on 'wrong' foods for good. You just have to eat healthy and with moderation. And once in a while you are allowed to indulge yourself with a moderate amount of your favorite 'not-so-healthy' snack.

LDL: low-density lipoprotein (Bad cholesterol)
The major cholesterol carrier in the blood. High levels of these LDLs are associated with atherosclerosis.
HDL: high-density lipoprotein (Good cholesterol)
This is thought to provide some protection against artery blockage.
Here's a list of foods that help lower cholesterol, which is a must for anyone who is trying to reduce their LDL levels and increase their HDL levels.
Apples: They are good for lowering your LDL cholesterol levels, 2 full apples, or 12 ounces of apple juice, if taken everyday, can reduce your risk of heart disease by as much as 50%.
Garlic: Garlic helps to low LDL cholesterol levels and thins your blood naturally. This prevents clogging up of arteries and lowers your risk of heart disease.
Onions: Eating just half a raw onion everyday can increase your HDL levels by 25% and lower your LDL as well. This sounds disgusting.
Beans and Legumes: These contain soluble fiber which helps to increase your HDL cholesterol and reduce your LDL cholesterol. All kinds of beans and legumes such as pinto, kidney, black-eyed, lentils, pink beans, etc help lower cholesterol and are good for your heart.
UnSaturated Fats: Contrary to the misconception that all kinds of fat are bad for you, unsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids can actually be good for your heart.
Monounsaturated fats: (olive oil, canola, peanut, and almond oil) and polyunsaturated fats (corn oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil etc) increase the HDL cholesterol and lower the LDL cholesterol and are good for your heart.
Other Cholesterol Lowering Foods: Oats, fenugreek, artichokes, turmeric, guggul, green tea, nuts, and black tea, are all known to help low cholesterol in your body.
Meats such as fish and chicken (of course skinless), and turkey are all great for you. Better than pork but probably not as good as beef, taste wise. If you do buy beef try get the extra lean kind. Still not the best but its better than regular.
1% or skim milk is the best. Whole milk and 2% have lots of fat in them.
Whole wheat bread is better than white bread. Make sure that the bread says whole wheat and doesn't have complicated words on the ingredients.
One other suggestion and your body will thank you for this. Remember to get your full intake of 8 glasses of water every single day.
Hope this helps!
