First and foremost is affordability. I assume you are thinking about renting because this is your first place. You need to determine how much you can afford per month for rent, utilities, phone, etc.. You will also need a security deposit on the rental unit as well as first months rent, and sometimes the last months rent. You are also likely to have to put up depostis for utilities and telephone. You also might want to consider the cost of renters insurance.

In addition you need to consider driving distance to your job and calculate the cost of the commute as well as the proximity to shopping.

The safety of a neighborhood is important. Rents are usually cheaper in high crime areas. Also consider the reputation of the the landlord or property management company from whom you will rent. Do they maintain the property and are they responsive to tenant needs?

You get the picture. Good luck with your move.

whether it's in a high-crime area or not, how big you want your home to be, whether it's in a location near a bunch of stores. My home for example is in a conveinent place and I can find most of what I want within a mile.

Placement to work is always good and look at your pay stubs if you could pay your rent with one paycheck you will be doing well. Try not to go over what you can afford. Look in your local paper for apartments and set up appointments to look at them.
