After reading many things from the Americans, it seems that there are a very few people who can carry on an intelligent conversation. The rest seem...dim! I cannot really candy-coat this at all. Americans seem like they're really slow witted!!! I know a lot about the States but they don't seem to know the answer to a simple question like "who is the prime minister of Canada?". We all know that George Bush is running your country(into the ground). So who can prove me wrong???

byhisgrace, thank you. You've hit the nail on the head. And yes, you are right. You are a smart man, and I don't mean to generalize about Americans because you are obviously a smart guy. See ya.

You may unfortunately be correct. I doubt that many even know which George Bush is president - or that there even have been presidents named George Bush. They all know what celebrity is sleeping with who & doing what & having/adopting/aborting a baby, who their maid is & what the maid had for breakfast. And I'm an American - imagine how that makes me feel? BTW - Stephen Harper is your PM.

The best educated country is probably Japan or Cube. Japan because they have all the money in the world to finance it and Cuba because they are nutrall and dont have a standing army so they can spend money on education. Japan has a 98% literacy rate, and i think Cuba has about a 96% literacy rate.

I will say the USA. The percentage of people in the USA who have higher Ed i think is the highest in the world. That doesn't mean I think our K-12 is up to snuff but in reality it really doesn't need to be. Unlike many countries every person has an opportunity at post secondary education. This is why we need immigrants for non technical jobs.

In French, basically everybody go to University cause it's almost free (registration fees are about 400 euro). It's fairly democratic, cause in theory, everybody can afford University... unlike in North America. But ultimately, does it make us smarter ? We definitely are book smart, but when it comes to practical knowledge, we're far behind North American. I bet a lot of my friend who have a Master degree don't know how to write a proper resume !

China stresses a lot upon uni. education as well. But like France, it's a theoritical knowledge. A good exemple is foreign language training in Chinese uni. Chinese students can write very well in English... but can't speak, cause it's barely part of the training !

I'd say American are fairly smart - just a bit self-centered when it comes to international politic, foreign languages and history.

Surprisingly, Canada.

43 per cent of Canadians have some type of post-secondary schooling -- more than citizens living in any other industrialized country.

The United States comes in second place with 38 per cent of the population having some kind of post-secondary education.

I believe it's Iceland.

And we really don't care who the prime minister of Canada is, as long as he does a good job of keeping all the Canuckians from crossing the border as illegal immigrants to the US.

Costa Rica. They have a 97% literacy rate. Because they are a neutral country and have no military, they can afford to spend money on education.
