Companies usually inquire immediately after the interview to get a background/drug test going if they are interested. If you didn't apply/interview for a position that required a background/drug test then I would say up to 2 weeks.
I work in Human Resources and I sometimes get really busy and can't follow-up with applicants right away.
I would not suggest waiting around for the company to call though. Keep interviewing because something better may come up.

Best thing is to ask in the interview when you can expect to hear from them. If you don't hear from them in that time, I'd give them a call to find out the status. A phone call or email after a week doesn't hurt anything, then they know your interested and if they are trying to decide between you and someone else, interest could go a long way. It also depends on the job field that your interviewing for.

The trick is to ask at the end of the interview when you should expect to hear from them.
I would wait 3 days and do a follow up call to see where they are in the process. Sometimes they have to see many candidates, and it may take time. Don't be shy about asking, your time is precious too and you can't just sit around waiting for them to tell you yay or nay.
In the meanwhile, nothing stops you from applying on other jobs.
Good luck!

I agree with several things that other posters have said.
Many times the people responsible are flooded with other duties, and do not always get back to you in a timely manner. This will often speak volumes about a company and what it is like to work there.
Until someone actually offers you a job that you want, keep interviewing.

Generally, I would say one to two weeks. But, it is hard to tell..for my current job..I waited even longer! Just send a follow-up e-mail or phone call once a week to the HR or staffing person handling the position to check up on your status if interested.

If you have not heard anything in 10 days - move on. There are better companies out there that will get back to you.
